Williamsburg is a town full of surprises. You wouldn’t think we’d have a high-end fashion designer living here, but we do. Meet Tabitha Sewer, of TJ Sewer, whose colorful women’s fashions have captured the eyes of women all over the world.
Tabitha, whose married name is Sewer (yes, what a coincidence!) has stitches in her DNA, practically. Her mother, Evangeline McLeod, is a fashion designer as well, and she taught Tabitha how to illustrate, design, and create clothing.
“I loved to draw designs as a teenager, like my prom dress, and my mom would make it. I started sewing in 2012 and I learned it all from my mom,” Sewer says.
The TJ Sewer line launched in fall 2014 and the first catalog was full of special-occasion skirts in jewel tones such as coral and fuchsia.
“I thought it would be a good way to test the market, with the circle skirt. I thought, for the holidays, people would be looking for longer, warmer items but in bold colors,” Sewer says.
The first collection was a success, catching the eye of Lauren Conrad’s website, and regional boutiques including Moxie in Virginia Beach and Quirks of Art in Williamsburg.
The 2015 collections “Urban Gems” and “Summer Jewels” featured skirts and dresses in vivid jewel tone colors such as amethyst, amber, jade, and ruby. The 2016 spring/summer collection branches out to tops, shorts, and jackets, and an “edgy feel with a feminine vibe.” It features large floral patterns—blue peony, for example—on a bomber jacket or a cropped jacket.
“In 2015 I was testing some things, and 2016, I feel like I’m coming out as myself,” Sewer said.
Her team includes her mother, two local seamstresses, and advice from her brother, Joshua, a handbag designer and fashion school student.
This talent definitely runs in the family. You could call it seamless—or just an eye for beautiful things!
