The Music
Pressing Strings: Pressing Strings is a three piece musical force hailing from Annapolis, Maryland– Their sound has widespread roots in a number of musical genres including blues, funk, soul, folk, and reggae.
The band is the brainchild of lead singer Jordan Sokel, who started the band with a friend in college and almost bagged the project altogether in 2012. “We were hitting that age where you either choose to pursue music as a hobby or a career and guys started taking another path so I was giving serious thought into retiring the band”. Luckily bassist Nick Welker was on the same page as Sokel and the two continued playing as a duo and eventually linked up with drummer Brandon Bartlett to continue making music as Pressing Strings.
JJ & Co.: James Justin Burke knows a few things about life on the road. From the Rockies to the Big Apple, he and his band, James Justin & Company, have stared eye-to-eye with a mountain lion in Old New Mexico, kissed the sky at Wolf Creek Pass in southern Colorado, and picked late into the evening in Metal Cities across the country. JJ & Co. set the tone with their striking original bluegrass, and rarely is a band so impeccably talented yet familiar and humble.
Cha Wa: The infectious music and dazzling stage show of Cha Wa has been described as “funk with feathers” – a sound rooted in traditional New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian music mixed with funk and soul, creating a non-stop groove machine. See the HBO series “Treme” for more details on the culture of Mardi Gras Indians, whose history dates in the Crescent City dates from 1885. Cha Wa, meaning “We’re coming for ya!” is a slang phrase used by every Mardi Gras Indian tribe. The band features legendary Mardi Gras Indians Irving “Honey” Banister and J’Wan Boudreaux on vocals and Kerry “Boom Boom” Vessell on bass drum, along with New Orleans music veterans Joe Gelini on drum set, John Fohl on guitar, Bill Richards on bass, and Steve Malinowski on organ.
