‘Capturing The Essence’ Solo ArtShow

On the Hill Gallery 402 Main Street, Yorktown, Virginia 23690
Yorktown Arts Foundation’s On The Hill Gallery presents a solo show by Ellen DeMaria, titled “Capturing The Essence,” April 7-29, 2018.
Ellen DeMaria has been painting for more than 25 years, and more intensively for the last five. She paints expressively in watercolor and acrylic, creatively layering colors, shapes, textures, and forms.
For this show – her first solo – DeMaria has produced works in the realm of abstract realism. “There are some paintings that show more detail than others,” she says. “It's a feeling that I want you to experience when you see it.”
For her subject matter, DeMaria is drawn to landscapes, particularly water scenes.
“You'll also see still lifes, highly textured abstracts, and natural elements of nature,” she said. “I love the rustic feel of old boats and harbors. The piles of crab pots and ropes and chains offer interesting textures to play around and I'm always searching for ways to paint figures involved in the scene, working or playing. I work to present my own unique viewpoint on my subject matter. It is the essence of the scene that I'm trying to show the viewer, hence the name of the show.”
Ellen DeMaria’s paintings have been juried and awarded prizes in the region. In 2017, she was juried into the Virginia Artists Show at Charles Taylor Arts Center in Hampton. The same year, two of her paintings were selected as part of Hampton Halls of Art XIX and XX, Hampton Convention Center’s permanent exhibit. She has also juried in Art at the River in Yorktown, and the Port Warwick Art and Sculpture Festival in Newport News.
The public is invited to a reception celebrating the opening of the show from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, April 7 at On The Hill Gallery, 401 Main St., in Yorktown. To learn more about Ellen DeMaria and her art, visit www.EllenDeMariaArtandJewelry.com.
