When a White Stone client wanted her home office and master bedroom makeover, designer Cindy Lloyd set out to create the rooms the client envisioned.
The office had been the provenance of the client’s late husband and reflected his taste in browns and tans with a duck border. Lloyd worked to transform the office into a room that reflected her client instead, beginning with fresh paint on the walls in a soft shade of purple. Although the husband’s desk remained, little else did. New carpet, lamps and mirrors complemented multi-colored drapery side panels on a black curtain rod and a reupholstered chair. “She found it to be such a refreshing change,” Lloyd says.
As for the impetus for the master bedroom makeover, it was the result of an elegant redo of the master bath, which caused the bedroom to pale in comparison. Using inspirational images the client had chosen, Lloyd worked with her to create a room that was both romantic and a bit edgy.
The first step was a bold one: repainting her off-white French Provincial bedroom furniture with Benjamin Moore’s “Blue Note,” a navy/charcoal hybrid, and replacing the traditional drawer pulls with contemporary brushed brass pulls. Textured gray wall-to-wall carpeting and an orange ultra suede headboard balanced each other perfectly. One of the client’s images showed a geometric black and white wallpaper, so Lloyd found a similar pattern in a navy that matched the furniture and used it only on the wall behind the bed. The wallpaper in the bathroom and dressing room was redone to better transition from those rooms to the bedroom and lighten the tone of the reimagined master bedroom.
Lloyd is gratified that the updated design allows her client to relax in a chair doing needlework, making the bedroom a refuge instead of merely a place to sleep.
“It’s the dynamic of our two personalities working together,” she says of trying to exceed expectations. “Their home should be a reflection of them and their lifestyle, not me.”
