Reedville’s small-town Halloween will have just enough tradition and spookiness for children of all ages and their families.
Mermaids (and a few pirates) will carry the theme this year on the lawn of the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, 504 Main St., starting around dusk Friday, Oct. 31.
“Hundreds and hundreds” of people come to the village for a “low-key but festive” Halloween, said Shauna McCranie, executive director of the museum.
There’s traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating, plus a treat for spectators with homes and yards full of seasonal décor, lights and blow-ups.
At the museum, the kids can collect their booty at the front door of the festively decorated administration building on campus.
Then they can walk along the museum’s front lawn to the decorated land-based deadrise boat Foggy River, where costumed volunteers, music and eerie smoke await. A viewing area will be set up on the lawn so people can watch the parade of trick-or-treaters as they exit onto Main Street. Bring a chair or use one of the museum’s, suggested Vernell Edwards, who is organizing the event with other volunteers.
Children who might find the Foggy River experience a bit too much can instead continue along on the sidewalk on Main Street from the office building, she said.
“Every year it gets bigger and better,” said McCranie.
Bethany Church is helping with the festivities. All the candy is donated; contributions can be dropped off the museum office.
