REEDVILLE -- The Reedville Fishermen's Museum will welcome the historic Chesapeake Bay skipjack Sigsbee to town June 17-18. For those two days there will be two renowned skipjacks in town, the Sigsbee and the museum's boat, Claud W. Somers.
The Sigsbee will dock at the foot of Main Street at the Crazy Crab. The Sigsbee crew will offer deck tours and educational programs, free and open to the public. Hours to visit are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 17 and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. June 18.
The museum, not usually open on Wednesdays, will be open that Wednesday, June 17, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m., in addition to the usual Thursday-Saturday hours.
Sigsbee was built in 1901 and dredged oysters commercially for 88 years. After she was acquired by the Living Classrooms Foundation in 1990, a team of shipwrights and students rebuilt her. Today she sails as a living classroom, teaching students about the ecology, history and economic importance of the Chesapeake Bay.
Visitors to the Sigsbee are encouraged to visit the museum, home of the historic skipjack Claud W. Somers, built in 1911. A Somers volunteer crew member will be on hand at the museum's dock both days to talk about the vessel.
The museum is at 504 Main St., Reedville. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors 65 and above; $5 for veterans; free for children 17 and under; and free for active duty military members. For information, call 804-453-6529 or e-mail office@rfmuseum.org.
