Editor's Note: Throughout the year, The Local Scoop aims to bring little reviews here, in the Williamsburg Scoop. This edition, writer Alexandra Haggerty tells us about her recent visit to Cakealicious.
Cakealicious. There's just too much to say about this place. It's kind of easy to drive past because it's tucked deep into Newtown.
The second you walk in the scent of cake hits you. The shop almost gives you a feeling of familiarity and home, like a summer morning when you were a kid and woke up to the smell of your mother making cookies.
My first impression was wow. They have displays of beautiful cakes everywhere, made with
the delicacy and precision of someone performing a surgery. There's a case of cupcakes by the
counter with edible pearls and beads sparkling on the frosting. To the right there are rafters
with twinkly lights hanging off of them, so the place definitely gets credit for its originality.
There's a card rack and party candles and pretty curtains. They've made it to look like a
comfortable living room where you can sit with your family and feel close to the people around
you. There's gold candles, and books of their cakes and weddings, and an electric fireplace for a hot coffee in the winter.
There are couches and chairs everywhere and a place to sit outside, and the music isn't obnoxious like in some places.
Overall, it's relaxing and a great place to study or work because it's so quiet.
But let's get to talking about the food!
Okay, so my being a chocolate addict, at least according to my dad, I chose the Chocolate
Truffle cupcake.
I took that home so I could also get a cotton candy frappé, per the recommendation of the man at the counter.
He was really nice and helpful, and even told us that the frappé is so good that he always hopes there's a little extra so it won't fit in my cup and he can have it.
Cotton candy ice cream is not my favorite, so I will admit that it didn't sound that good, but it was like drinking perfection through a straw.
Of course I got a terrible brain freeze on the way home, because I don't believe in moderation when it comes to any form of sugar.
A few days later I ate the cupcake, and it certainly did not disappoint. I cut it in half and
found that it was filled with chocolate cream, a delightful surprise. They didn't even pick the
cupcake out of the display case, they made another one! It was like being at home and frosting
my own cupcakes, which just added to that happy feeling.
My mom and I went back a few weeks later when the gelato was out, since earlier the
weather had been too cold. After careful consideration I asked for Chocolate Mint Cheesecake.
It was really good, but a little too rich for my taste.
The chai latte with coconut milk is good too, according to my mom. She asked me to include
that here in this review “for those of us that don't drink cow.” Mental image, be gone.
