For many pet owners across the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, finding timely veterinary care has become increasingly difficult. Appointments often require weeks or even months of waiting, creating challenges for routine care as well as unexpected medical needs. It is a persistent problem with which the Animal Welfare League (AWL) of the Northern Neck is all too familiar. During her many years of volunteer service with the organization, AWL President Barb Dietz has found that "it is not uncommon for someone to stop by our thrift shop after moving to the area and ask where they should take their pet for veterinary care. At this point, we have no easy answers."
It is also a problem long shared by the AWL. Many of its programs — which include spay/neuter assistance, emergency medical care, shelter support, rescue and foster efforts, and pet food distribution — depend upon local veterinary support, prompting the organization to ask what it can do to address the growing shortage of veterinarians serving the region. The answer is one of the most significant initiatives in the AWL's sixty-year history.
Through a newly established funding agreement, the AWL will provide financial assistance to Katie Baker as she pursues her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. In return, Baker has committed to practicing in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula region following graduation, helping expand local access to veterinary care. Funding for the initiative was made possible in part through the sale of a generous community donation, allowing the AWL to invest in a long-term solution that will benefit animals and pet owners throughout the Northern Neck.

The initiative grew directly from the AWL's 2022 Strategic Plan, in which board members identified the shortage of veterinary professionals as one of the most pressing issues affecting animal welfare in the region. While researching possible solutions, the AWL reached out to veterinary practices throughout the area, offering assistance and asking how the organization could help strengthen local veterinary services.
"When we realized that new veterinarians often secure employment before graduating, we knew we needed to take the long view," said Dietz. "This is a big and exciting step forward for AWL as we look to the future and help meet the veterinary needs of the Northern Neck."
As the AWL prepared to launch the initiative, the board of directors identified Baker as an exceptional candidate. Her outstanding academic record, previous veterinary experience, and commitment to serving the Northern Neck made her an ideal fit for the program. A 2025 summa cum laude graduate of Virginia Wesleyan University's Batten Honors College, Baker earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology on the pre-veterinary track, with a minor in chemistry. She has already worked as a veterinary assistant, completed wildlife medicine training in Australia, participated in veterinary internships, conducted biological research, and built an impressive record of academic achievement and community service.
"I am truly honored to receive this support from AWL," Baker said. "Veterinary school is rigorous and demanding, so not having to worry about the financial side of things is truly a blessing. This will allow me to focus on my studies."
Baker's desire to become a veterinarian began at an early age while watching wildlife with her grandmother, who inspired a lifelong curiosity about animals. Years later, while participating in a wildlife internship in Australia, she met a veterinarian at Taronga Zoo who encouraged her to stay focused despite the challenges of the veterinary school application process. "She helped me realize that everyone's path is different," Baker said, "and that I could become a veterinarian regardless of the obstacles before me, as long as I remained determined." Although she has worked with livestock and exotic species, Baker finds herself drawn to companion animal medicine. "I aspire to be a companion or mixed animal veterinarian," she said.
The Northern Neck is already a familiar place to Baker. "I have been fishing on the Corrotoman and the Rappahannock for as long as I can remember," she said. "I hope that my presence in the Northern Neck helps provide more accessible veterinary care for members of the community."
The veterinary education initiative reflects the AWL's belief that improving the lives of animals means looking beyond today's needs and investing in tomorrow's solutions. By supporting the education of future veterinarians, the organization is strengthening its long-standing commitment to preventing animal cruelty and promoting the humane treatment of animals throughout the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. "We are taking a positive step," said the AWL's president. "We look forward to working with Katie and are excited for her as she begins her veterinary education."
